SERVE Fri Celebration

On Friday, December 11, participants in SERVE Fri celebrated the end of the group's inaugural semester at the SERVE Fri Fall Celebration, held in the Stearns Performance Space at lunchtime. About 40 SERVE Fri supporters and participants, including JSC students and staff, as well as community members from local organizations, showed up to dine together and to reflect on this past semester's 12 successful service-learning events.

All together, 117 students, staff, and faculty offered 523.5 volunteer hours on Fridays throughout the fall season to a host of worthy projects, making a significant positive impact on the lives of those most in need in our community, as well as on the local environment.

Child Development Center Goes to the Dogs!

A volunteer from the North Country Animal League recently brought two furry helpers to help teach JSC Child Development Center students about how to approach dogs they don't know and to learn about animal shelters. The children have been collecting donations for the NCAL shelter.

Outdoor Education Students in the Community

On November 6, Brad Moskowitz and students from the Introduction to Outdoor Education class worked with the Catamount Trail Association and other volunteers to reroute and cut a new section of trail near the village of Jay. The Catamount Trail is a 300-mile backcountry ski/snowshoe trail that runs from Massachusetts to Canada. The Outdoor Education Program has volunteered to be a steward of a section of the trail (section 30, Hazen’s Notch to Jay Pass) in order to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable outdoor recreation in Vermont.

On October 18, students from the Introduction to Outdoor Education class worked with Brad Moskowitz and representatives from the Green Mountain Club to rebuild and maintain part of the Long Trail, in Johnson. The installed new puncheon (or “bog bridges”), cleared water bars and cleaned up illegal fire pits at Prospect Rock. Dave Hardy, the Director of Field Programs and Kathryn Wrigley from the GMC helped to guide their efforts.
