Green Mountain Business Expo a Success

JSC Participants in the Expo
Dibden Center for the Arts Director Jan Herder, who helped coordinate the Green Mountain Business Expo on November 9, 2010, reports the event was a big success. He writes:

A big shout out and thanks to all the students and staff who helped make the Green Mountain Business Expo a success! Special thanks to Heidi Wrighton and Renate Callahan.  Jim Black’s business students helped exhibitors load in and out—we received many compliments, and great feedback about our students from JSC Alum’s, including our new Lamoille Senator,  Richard Westman.

The JSC booth was staffed by students Warren Ramsey, representing the Business and Hospitality Program, Hillary Seel for the Eco-reps and Green Solutions Club, and Henry Meola representing Technical Theater. Potential employers were impressed with the professionalism, technical skills and civic engagement that our students demonstrated.

JSC Slides Past VTC in Blood Drive!

On Wednesday, October 20, JSC community members stopped by SHAPE to donate blood during the college's bi-annual blood drive. Kelly Palmer, assistant director of community service at JSC reports:

As you know, we were going for the "all time record".... we didn't beat JSC's all time record of 180, but we did beat our record since 1998  with 133 productive units of blood. That means that 133 units of blood are usable to patients in need. For every unit/pint of blood there is a potential to save 3 people's lives. We had many more walk through the door and I appreciate everyone's effort in trying to be a part of this important event, especially when the American Red Cross has a critical need right now. They send their appreciation as well.

Our next blood drive is scheduled for March.

Church Street Cow

The JSC contribution to the "Cows Come Home to Burlington" community art project looks placidly...or at least plaid-ly, on.

JSC art students, organized by Campus Arts Coordinator Leila Bandar, took inspiration from the local Johnson Woolen Mills, and painted the fiberglass cow plaid. After spending a few weeks on campus, the cow made its way to Church Street in Burlington, where it is part of a larger herd of 34 other cows.

The cow will be auctioned off at the end of the summer to raise funds for the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger.

Congratulations to the Class of 2010!

Vermont Peanut Butter Company CEO Addresses JSC Business Students

(Story contributed by Renate Callahan)

Chris Kaiser, founder and CEO of Vermont Peanut Butter Company in Stowe, addressed students from three JSC classes -- business, economics and hospitality management -- on Monday, Feb. 1, about what it takes to start and run a new business.

The topics ran the gamut from small business management and all that entails, to finding a niche for one’s product, prudent financial planning, legal aspects, ethics, rules and regulations pertaining to food preparation, and protecting one’s trademarks and copyrights, leaving some students wide-eyed by the sheer complexity of just, well, making peanut butter, right?

He also talked about the importance of having a business plan in place from the start and sticking to it, but also to realizing when it is time to change course and move on to the next level, as he needed to do after only some six months in business.

Vermont Peanut Butter Company has been a huge success from the get-go, and JSC students were eager to find out about every step and aspect of this true Vermont success story, some professing to have plans to start a business of their own for after graduation. Kaiser came well-prepared, and thanks to years of experience in financial management, he was able to get across even the more mundane aspects of what it takes to be a successful business owner.

In wrapping up, he even offered advice and encouragement to any aspiring young business owner in the students group, promising to answer e-mails and phone calls himself, thus helping to nurture a healthy base of small businesses in Vermont.

The combined, three-class event was a success, and the JSC professors involved -- Mary Gallagher Mathieu, Todd Comen and Norman McElvany -- vowed to repeat it next year.

Oh, and did I mention the yummy samples at the beginning of the event? Seven of the 10 available delicious flavors were sampled by the discerning palates of college students and passed the tests with flying colors.

Nonprofit Training a Success

On Friday, January 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first in a series of free trainings for Lamoille Valley Nonprofits, “Strengthening the Lamoille Valley Network,” was held in Room 132 of the Dewey Campus Center at JSC. Participants strategized about partnership opportunities, learned how to use CommonGoodVT.org to share information and resources, and planned topics for subsequent trainings.
