SHAPE Access Information for JSC Students, Faculty and Staff

The excitement is building as the renovation of our SHAPE facility nears completion! Many areas of the building are currently under construction and are off-limits to faculty, staff, and students until construction is complete. These include:

• Women’s community locker room
• First floor lobby
• Former weight room
• Varsity gym
• Entire second floor

In the meantime, the following facilities are open and available for use during scheduled hours:

• Multi-gym (half)
• Training room
• Pool
• Locker rooms

We anticipate construction being complete, and the facility be fully open (with the exception of the varsity gym), by October 1. The varsity gym will be open by October 15.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Multi-Gym Open?
Yes. Half of the multi-gym is available and will be open during the construction period from Monday through Friday, 8:00am-6:00pm, with the exception of when classes are being held in the space. A full listing of class times and space availability will be displayed at the SHAPE facility.

Is the Pool Open?
Yes. During the construction period the pool will be open Monday through Friday from 2:00-5:00pm. Regular hours will take effect upon the completion of construction. Hours will be posted on blackboard.vsc.edu and will be updated at SHAPE on a regular basis.

How do I get into the building?
Please access the building through the west entrance. This entrance is located on the Athletic Field side of the building closest to the Library. A temporary check-in desk will be located there.

Can I sign out equipment?
Yes, limited equipment (such as balls, tennis racquets, frolf discs) will be available for sign-out at the temporary check-in desk at the west entrance.

Will the college be holding spinning or other fitness classes?
Yes. The following open fitness classes will be held during the construction period (located in the multi-gym unless otherwise indicated):

Spinning: Monday 12:15
Tuesday 1:15
Wed, Thurs, Fri 12:00

Cross-Fit: Tues, Thurs 11:00

After construction is complete, classes will revert to the schedule printed on the SHAPE brochure and available on the website.

Will fitness equipment be available?
While the college will be offering intramural activities and other fitness events throughout the construction period, fitness equipment will not be available until the construction is complete due to space availability. Please watch for the grand opening of the building when you can use our new facilities!

Is the climbing wall open?
The climbing wall is open for academic classes on an as needed basis. Your instructor will arrange for access to the space when it is required and notify you of the access method. The space is otherwise closed until construction is complete.

Are the racquetball courts available?
The racquetball courts are closed during construction. These courts will re-open when the construction is complete.

Are intramurals still happening?
Most definitely! A wide range of activities are scheduled for the first few weeks of the semester. Please refer to the SHAPE brochure being distributed on campus or check the postings at SHAPE and on the website to review offerings.

I have a class scheduled in SHAPE. Help!
Students should check their updated class schedule to confirm the location of classes. Due to construction, some classes have been moved from SHAPE to other buildings while others have been relocated to the multi-gym.

Are classes being held on the mezzanine?
All classes scheduled for the Mezzanine classroom have been rescheduled to other locations. Please check your current class schedule for the room assignment.

When will construction be complete?
The college expects construction to be complete by October 1, with the varsity gym being completed by October 15. We understand that this is an inconvenience, but we feel that the value you’ll receive from the completed building will make it worth it to you!

What are we renovating?
This renovation involves all areas of the building except for the multi-gym, varsity and men’s locker rooms, climbing wall and racquet ball courts. The college is creating a climate controlled fitness center, state of the art spinning studio, group exercise rooms, and function spaces. In addition, the varsity gym has received a complete make-over with new flooring, seating and wall treatments. This is truly a transformation of the space that improves the quality of the facility and makes it a more enjoyable space for the student athlete and casual fitness enthusiast.

Where do I find the athletic staff and coaches?
The athletics and intramural staff will be in the Martinetti conference room until construction is completed. Administrative support functions for athletics are temporarily located in the Dean of Students office in Dewey. Staff at either location can assist you with locating coaches. Contact information for coaches is also on the athletics homepage on the JSC website. The training staff can be found in the training room in SHAPE.

What about the exercise physiology lab?
During construction this function will be located off the slate lounge in the basement of Governor’s Hall. If you are a volunteer or study participant you will be provided with information regarding building access.
